Fourteen parents attended a parenting session in early January on the topic of Understanding Children with Special Needs. There was an overview of some types of disorders and sharing from parents of special needs children about how we can help ourselves and our children accept and understand children with special needs.

The ICS Parent Association (PA) is hosting our annual Gospel Dinner on Friday March 23, 2012 at the Grand Capital Banquet Hall in Shatin Town Hall. (沙田京都高級宴會廳). This is a gospel outreach activity for the entire ICS community, particularly targeting non-believers. This year’s speaker is Rev. Young Man Chan (陳恩明) who is a gifted crusade speaker. The topic is The Source of Happiness (快樂的泉源). We would encourage everyone in our community to invite other parents and children, family members and friends to attend this meeting. We hope to bring the love and grace of our Lord to many more others who have yet to know Him personally.

The dinner table price was set at HK$2880 ($240 per person x 12). To facilitate easy booking, we would appreciate booking of a minimum of one table for each reservation. You may sponsor one table (or more) by faith, send us the fee accordingly, then start inviting people to fill up the table. On the other hand, participants may gather together to form one table (12 people for each table) and one person will be responsible for the registration and booking.

For registration, please send email to ICSPAEXCO@gmail.com , then send a cheque payable to International Christian School, marking "Gospel Dinner 2012" at its back, attention to Becky Lee Su (secretary of PA of ICS). Acknowledgement of receipt will be issued later via email to the registrant.

We are encouraged by the response of the Gospel Dinner last year. Seeds were sown and souls have been saved. Do pray earnestly for this event and start inviting your friends now! Try to have a few Christian friends seated in the same table as your non-Christian friends, so they can be cared for properly.

The work of the Search Committee formed by the Board of Trustees for the recruitment of the next Headmaster is in full swing. In order to assist the Search Committee, the PA ExCo has just formed a working sub-committee called the PA ExCo Next Headmaster Sub-Committee ("the PANC") to collect parents' views on the expected qualities that parents may have on the next Headmaster. The PANC will convey the parents' views collected to the Search Committee and the Board.

The PANC comprises five PA ExCo members (Grace So, Ronna Chao, Monic Mou, Andrew Ngo and Tony Ma as chairman)

Why Choose a Christian University?

One of our ExCo wrote to Biola University and received the following about Christian Universities from President Barry H. Corey. It was available at the recent school college fair, but in case you missed it, we've put it here for your reference.

Why Choose a Christian University?

When considering which university to attend, high school students and their parents should think not only about how a university teaches students and equips them with facts and knowledge, but also about how a university grows a student and enriches their soul. Sadly, many universities in America and across the world have lost their “soul” and drifted away from moral and religious concerns. Many colleges have abandoned their Christian roots or shunned faith altogether, replacing it with aggressive secularism and a sometimes antagonistic prejudice against the role of belief in education.

Christian universities do still exist, however, and their insistence on a robust integration of faith and academic learning provides an important alternative in the contemporary landscape of higher education. At a Christian university you will find top-notch training in a variety of disciplines — science, health, math, art, music, language, business, etc. — that is coupled with and informed by the pursuit of God and the study of Scripture.

At Biola University, where I work, we believe that nurturing the soul and nurturing the mind are both essential for a meaningful education. We teach our students to integrate their faith with their academic and professional development. No matter what their career aspiration or major, each student at Biola receives a foundational education in Bible — taught by some of the brightest biblical scholars today. We believe that the Bible is the center of knowledge, and that out of this focused center we are better able to produce graduates who are prepared for a vocation, spiritually mature, grounded in the Bible, globally minded, and ready to take on the challenges of the world.

Trends in American Universities

One trend in American higher education that all universities are dealing with right now is the challenge of adapting to the digital revolution. The Internet and other digital technologies have changed everything in culture, including higher education, and universities have been presented with new problems and possibilities as a result. At Biola University, we have prioritized the leveraging of new technology for the purposes of our mission. For example, we have started offering numerous online courses to our students, and we’ve put select courses and lectures on iTunes U, where people across the world can download free Biola University educational resources. Our seminary, Talbot School of Theology, has also started a faculty blog — The Good Book Blog — to provide solid biblical scholarship online to anyone in the world. In coming years, Biola has plans to organize even more of our academic resources to make available to the world beyond our campus borders.

Another, more regrettable trend in American universities is the trend of hyper-fragmentation. American universities are increasingly characterized by fragmentary interest groups and hyper-specialized disciplines, each with their own focuses and agendas. The “uni” aspect of the university is increasingly lost. At many universities, there is no consensus about the end goal of education or what exactly a successful college graduate should look like. Part of the confusion comes from the postmodern attack on the very notion of a unifying ideal, and part of it comes from a resistance to any suggestion that a conviction, ethic, or moral foundation should inform education.

Christian universities like Biola fight against this fragmentation by focusing everything we do around a core conviction — in this case, the all-encompassing conviction that God is the author of all truth and that all knowledge comes from him. The liberal arts education at Biola is not fragmentary; it’s interdisciplinary. It is an education that gives students a reason for learning and a foundation upon which to expand their horizons and explore their vocational purpose. It’s an education that believes in the relevance of a Christian worldview and seeks to apply it to all areas of life.

HS Community Potluck 2011

Last Thursday the HS and the Parents Association hosted a HS Community Potluck and new parent info night as well as a “Preparing for College” seminar by Sue Farley. People started arriving around 6 p.m. and those interested were led on a school tour by Student Council Reps.

It was nice to see students, parents, and faculty chatting together around the Upper Gym.

A welcome announcement and prayer by the HS Principal, Brian Van Tassel, introduction of the teachers and the PA, and performance by the Show Choir led up to the potluck dinner at 6:45 p.m.

People got their food then stood or sat in circles continuing to chat among themselves while violin and cello music wafted through the air.

About an hour later, people split up to go to the new parent info presentation or college-prep talk, while others continued to hang out and talk or go downstairs to the Lower Gym that was also open at this time for sport.

Overall, the event went well and there was enough food for all. We hope more parents and students will join in the future!

As ICS continues to expand, so does our need for parental involvement. Involvement in the ICS Parent Association allows parents to voice their concerns and ideas. It is also an opportunity for parents to be part of their child’s school life.

As we look forward to the next school year, it is time to choose new members for some of the positions on the Executive Committee (ExCo). If you would like to serve for a term in ExCo or know another member of the Parent Association you would like to recommend to serve, please read the nomination material and complete the Nomination Form that is posted on the ICS PA website

For the 2011-12 academic school year, the following positions are up for re-election or are open.

- Campus Representatives: Kindergarten (1), Elementary (3), Secondary (4)

Please return all Nomination Forms to the “PA Election Committee” by May 20, 2011. The election will take place on May 30 2011, at the ICS Chapel 5th floor, during the AGM that begins at 7:30 p.m. Any last minute nominations can be written in on the ballot at the meeting.

Route : Pak Tam Chung (北潭涌) to Cheung Shan (長山), Sai Kung

Difficulty: two stars (out of five stars), children are welcome

Meeting place and time: Tuck shop at Pak Tam Chung Bus Station at 9:30am

Transport:
1. Private car, with free parking at Pak Tam Chung. Risk of full car-park, need to reach earlier to secure parking (before 8:30am); alternate parking at Po Leung Kuk Pak Tam Chung campsite, opposite to public carpark at Pak Tam Chung (daily charge about HK$80)
2. Bus: number 94 from Sai Kung, off bus at Pak Tam Chung (end station of this bus is at Wong Shek Pier)
3. Taxi

Equipment:
Bring your own food, water (at least 1 liter per person), cap, umbrella, sunscreen, sunglass, mosquito repellent, light hiking shoes or sneakers etc.

Date: Saturday, Feb. 26th from 2:30 pm to 5 pm at ICS, 1/F, Room 104, near the Lu Kao Hwa Theater
Content: Explore Chinese cultural elements that shape parenting and how they affect all of us. Compare it to biblical parenting and seek God's will in our family life.

Both Christian and non-Christian parents can benefit from this seminar to find the right balance of mutual support in family. Friends and family of our ICS community are welcome to attend

No admission fee for this seminar, but participants can support Pastoral Care School (a charitable organization) with a free will offering.

Actual hiking time is expected to be within 4 hours (for children), one hour of lunch time/big rest.
Difficulty: Two stars out of Five stars
Special Points: Not difficult, children should be OK; Scenic view of N-E part of the New
Territories; educational tour of the ecology of that region e.g. mangroves
Transport:
1. Private car, free parking lot at Wu Kau Tang parking (about 27 carpark spaces available);
car-pool encouraged to reduce the number of cars. Tolo Harbour Highway towards North, left
highway at Tai Po, head towards Tai Mei Tuk (大尾篤) along Ting Kok Road (汀角路), then

It was a successful event with wonderful speakers Tony Ma and Francis Chan and a number of people were prayed for, received blessings, and accepted Christ during the course of the evening...

HS Community Potluck

Last night the Parents Association hosted a HS Community Potluck. People started trickling into the Upper Gym around 6 p.m. and after dropping off their contribution to the food table, started conversations with other parents and faculty. Kids found their friends - some played the games set out on a table for small groups and others were in the Lower Gym that was also open at this time for volleyball and basketball.

A welcome announcement by the HS Principal, prayer by our PA Chair, a presentation on Parent Courses in the works, and singing led by the Worship Team were a prelude to dinner.

While everyone was lining up to get food then sit in circles or at tables, several of our talented vocal ensembles serenaded us.

As people finished eating some mingled to talk to others, while others went back downstairs to the Lower Gym to play ball again.

It was great to see teams made up of all grade-levels of the HS as well as a few teachers and parents playing both volleyball and basketball. We were prepared with team games of Pictionary and Dodgeball, but decided not to play since people were OK with the other activities.

Overall, the event went well and there was enough food for all. We hope more parents will join in the future!

What happens at CSM Basic Seminar?

The CSM Basic Seminar usually lasts for 12-13 weeks and it consists of five seminars and one weekend retreat. Seminar meetings are held fortnightly or weekly. For each seminar, there will be a Bible-based video teaching, and a small group discussion in a relaxed and safe environment. The video teaching and small group discussion can be run on the same day or on separate days. Each seminar typically lasts for 2 hours.

It is essential that participants set aside 1 to 2 hours each week to complete homework and course material. Weekend retreat runs on a Friday evening and all day Saturday, held twice a year, usually in the Spring and Fall. Teaching on additional topics and personal ministry is the highlight of the retreat. Breakthroughs and changes lives are the result.

Cleansing Stream Basic Seminar runs twice a year through various local churches in Hong Kong, conducted in Chinese, English, and other languages (French, Nepalese, Sri Lankan), and we look forward to expand to more language groups in the future.

Weekend retreat: Friday evening and Saturday all day. Some topics include:

Passage to Purity
Guilt, Shame and Condemnation
Healing from the Orphan’s Heart
Additional topics will be included as needed
Seminar 5: Press Towards the Goal

Please note that the Seminars prepares the participant’s heart to receive ministry and to better understand the spiritual dynamics presented at the Retreat. The Seminar and Retreat are structured in such way that they compliment one another through pairing discipleship and deliverance. Hence it not possible to attend the retreat without first completing the seminars.

We are hosting a HS Community Potluck dinner on Friday, September 10 from about 6 – 9:30pm in the Upper Gym and podium. PARENTS come meet teachers, staff and other parents as well as the kids your kids hang out with. KIDS come hang out with your friends and meet your friends parents.

Enjoy conversation, activities and yummy food brought by everyone to share.

If there are enough people interested, perhaps we could set up an evening sale/swap event otherwise we can monitor the emails and let parents know if someone has something they're interested in.

We have had our first Committee meeting and would like to announce a few changes - Marlon is stepping down as Chair to be replaced by Fai, who was Vice Chair. (They are swapping roles.) We welcome Tony Ma who is joining Phyllis as a Prayer Group Coordinator. Becky has agreed to help as Secretary until the position is filled, but is still serving as SS Rep. There are still vacant campus rep positions as well. If you or any one you know would like to serve, please let us know!

Minutes of ICS PA AGM (09-10)

1. Quorum was met for the AGM meeting with 53 member proxies received and 12 members in attendance (total 65). There were several conflicting events scheduled for the same evening resulting in a poor showing.

2. Pastor Fai Chan was invited to open the AGM with a prayer.

3. 2008-09 AGM minutes were reviewed, Kirby proposed to accept and no objection received. Minutes passed.

4. Marlon Cheung (Chairman) gave his report for the year 2009-10.

5. PA Finance Report (as of 4/30) was reviewed and about $10,000 more in expenses expected to be claimed will change totals of campus spending.

6. Queenie Wong, Election Committee Chair, took the floor to present the nominees for the Executive Committee election. As there were fewer nominations than the vacancies, all nominations were accepted –Vice Chair: Fai Chan; Treasurer: Kirby Chan; Kindergarten Rep: Ruby Lam; Elementary Reps: Maria Lau, Monic Mou, Penny Yue, and Andrew Ngo (moving up from Kindergarten); Secondary Reps: Vanessa Yun; (re-elected): Rosemary Choi, and Becky Su

Therefore, the new EXCO members for 2010-11 were announced – Chairman: Marlon Cheung; Vice Chair: Jacquelyn Yu, Fai Chan; Treasurer: Kirby Chan; Secretary: (vacant); Secondary Representatives: Louisa Lee, Becky Su, Rosemary Choi, Vanessa Yun, (two vacancies); Elementary Representatives: Melody Funk, Andrew Ngo, Maria Lau, Monic Mou, Penny Yue, (one vacancy); Kindergarten Representatives: Ruby Lam, (one vacancy); Prayer Group Coordinators: Phyllis Fung, (one vacancy)

7. AOB - PARC (PA Reform Committee) is planning future meetings. PARC and teachers reps. are exchanging proposed future PA/PTA constitution drafts. Once they have reached consensus, PARC then can present it to the PA members for decisions. Current PARC structure: Dr. Jimmy Fung (non PA EXCO) as Chairman, Alex Hung (PA EXCO) as secretary, Marlon Cheung (PA EXCO), Rosemary Choi (PA EXCO), Queenie Wong (non PA EXCO) and Annie Wong (non PA EXCO).

8. As there was no further business, the Chairman invited Vice Chairman Kirby Chan to close the AGM meeting at 8:25pm.

Dear Parents,

As ICS continues to expand, so does our need for parental involvement. Involvement in the ICS Parent Association allows parents to voice their concerns and ideas. It is also an opportunity for parents to be part of their child’s school life.

As we look forward to the next school year, it is time to choose new members for some of the positions on the Executive Committee (ExCo). If you would like to serve for a term in ExCo or know another member of the Parent Association you would like to recommend to serve, please read the nomination material and complete the Nomination Form that is posted on the ICS Intranet .

For the 2010-11 academic school year, the following positions are up for re-election or are open.

Please return all Nomination Forms to the “PA Election Committee” by May 26, 2010. For Secondary parents, your child can give the envelope to the School Office.

The election will take place on 28th May, 2010, at the school chapel 5th floor, begins at 7:30 p.m. Any last minute nominations can be written in on the ballot at the meeting. We hope to see you there. Please contact the “PA Election Committee” if you have any questions.

Whole School Teacher Appreciation Lunch - last one for this school year!

Secondary parents are planning a Whole School Teacher Appreciation Lunch for Friday, April 30 in conjunction with the 4th grade Elementary parents. This will be the third, and last, lunch this year and I'm sure with your help it will be as successful as the others.

Please take this opportunity to express your thanks to your teachers by contributing a dish of food (perhaps 8-10 servings) or dessert and let us know by email to or phone. It is really wonderful to see all the teachers enjoying this time together and I know they really appreciate it!

Please bring food to the 2/F Teacher's Lunchroom or drop off at the table in the parking garage before 11am. Thank you so much for your help!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the fifth grade and secondary school parents that contributed delicious food to make the 2nd combined Teacher Appreciation Lunch a success. The teachers really enjoyed and appreciated the lunch - it's so neat to see everyone eating and fellowshipping together. Here are some slides presented during Part 2 of the presentation from St. Stephen's Society. It was an interesting and informative presentation - too bad we ran out of time and had to cut short this program that is intended to be a week-long seminar. We would like to thank Jackie Pullinger and her group of several speakers, some who shared their stories of addiction with us, for working with our school to provide these two seminars as well as others presented to our high school students. If there is enough interest from parents, there was talk of organizing future seminars. Also, a big thank you to our generous parents who donated to the society.

All parents are reminded they are welcome to attend a Parent Seminar with St. Stephen's Society on Saturday, Feb 6th from 2:30 until 4:30pm in the Lu Kao Hwa Theatre. There will be snacks and drinks provided.

This is part two and speakers will be giving ideas about parenting for healthy development during adolescent years and suggesting ways of intervening early to prevent addictive behaviors from developing. Part one was attended by just over 50 people and many stayed to enjoy a light lunch and fellowship after. Following are a few of the informative slides that were presented. We hope to see you there!

Thursday, December 10 will be the first whole school Teacher Appreciation Lunch coordinated with 3rd grade Room Moms and Secondary parents. There are two more scheduled in February and April with 5th and 4th grade respectively.

Please show your children's teachers how much you appreciate them by contributing a dish of food (8-10 servings) or dessert for this lunch. You may have your child bring the food to school with them in the morning or deliver by 10:45am to the 2/F Teacher Lunch Room.

Curriculum Review

This year the Bible and Chinese and Foreign Language curriculums are being reviewed. Last week we hosted an evening "Coffee and Chat" to give parents a chance to have their comments heard, documented, and to be given to the Curriculum Committee headed by Ed Tackett.

Please feel free to leave any feedback and comments on either since the process is ongoing. In December there will be a chance for parents to sit in Focus Groups for Foreign Language with an external consultant who will then write a report of recommendations.
